I’m all about travel and seeing new sites, but I do struggle with keeping my fitness game strong while on vacation. Vacation offers a lot of opportunities outside of the gym to get your fitness like walking or biking tours, swimming, kayaking, etc., but it can be oh so tempting to just veg out and eat until your heart is content. Then when you finally return home you feel bloated and lethargic and the last thing you feel like doing it getting your sweat on at the gym.

I love to get out and see the world as much as the next person, but why should that mean any of us have to give up our healthy lifestyles while we’re abroad? While many people think that vacations equal no exercise and junk food, that doesn’t always have to be the case. Here I have six ways to keep active and healthy on vacation that will help to keep your goals in check.
1. Pick a suitable destination
It’s important to think about where you will be heading if you want to stay active. Perhaps you have no choice but to use public transport? Maybe walking can be difficult for you or you’re recovering from surgery? Picking a suitable destination is the first place to start when it comes to finding a vacation that lets you stay active.
Did you know that Amsterdam and Berlin are two of the top cities designed to be accessed by anyone? No longer does the thought of not being able to get around have to be a worry and you can keep active regardless!
2. Take a moment to yourself
I strongly believe remaining healthy is all about starting from within. After all, who else is going to be there to look out for number one? Sometimes, the stress of traveling is enough to make many of us anxious, and it can be hard to find a way to calm down. I have often looked to meditation as a way to bring myself back down to the ground, and with so many types of meditation in the world, it can be easy to find one that suits your vacation environment.
3. Think about breakfast
Many hotels offer up breakfast as part of the package. It can be a great way to save money as well as not worrying about shopping for groceries every morning. However, this can also be one of the toughest obstacles in your goal to remain healthy. Buffets usually come filled with a host of options ranging from cooked food to fruit.
One of the best ways to avoid overeating first thing in the morning is to pre-plan your meals. Checking out the options before deciding on an egg morning, a fruit morning etc. This means you should find it easier to keep on track. You can keep healthy on vacation by starting each day off healthy!
4. Get out and enjoy the view
Walking has a host of benefits. For example, did you know that walking for 20 minutes a day can help prolong your life? Plus, walking can also help boost your mood as well as a number of other health benefits. Heading on vacation is the perfect chance to see an entirely new land.
Now, you can keep active and healthy on vacation by lacing up your shoes and getting to enjoy all the new sights and sounds. You never know, you could have spent the whole day exploring the area before you realize the time. Who knows what you could uncover?
5. Keep yourself hydrated
Water is the life-source of most things in this world. All that sunbathing or sightseeing can make it easy to forget the importance of drinking plenty of water. It will be almost impossible to keep active if you don’t have enough water, and getting enough for your body is one of the best ways to stay healthy. Carrying a reusable bottle with you while out and about, and avoiding the sugary drinks for most of the day, are two ways you can ensure you’re getting enough of the delicious stuff.
6. Get your rest
One of the toughest parts for many of us on vacation is getting used to sleeping in an unfamiliar room. So how is anyone supposed to get their eight hours? There are many things we can do; packing home comforts or eating at the same time every day — these are just some tips to help ensure you’re getting the correct amount of rest each night. Making sure we give our bodies a break will help to provide us with the energy to stay active and healthy the following day.
