There are so many supplements out there it could make anyone’s head spin! Here I am to the rescue with my must haves for the workout savvy woman who wants to support her healthy lifestyle without breaking the bank, carry a giant pillbox around with her or have to have an extra pantry installed! See below for my favorite top 3 supplements that I think everyone should include in their diet.

I was introduced to this pre-workout, High Volume, a few years ago when I was looking for a supplement without caffeine in it. I originally tried the Cotton Candy flavor which is way to sweet for me and I love sweet. So that’s saying a lot. Raspberry Lemonade, however, has won my heart! It dissolved completely into water without clumping and is quite tasty. It also comes in Paradise Cooler, Melon Berry Twist, and Blue Frost. I love the variety because I can always try a different flavor when I run out of this one so it doesn’t get stale!

The energy is clean and isn’t the kind of pre-workout that is going to have your heart beating out of your chest if that’s the kind you’re looking for. It’s a much more subtle energy boost that will have you pushing harder, but won’t keep you up at night. This is super important for me since I tend to workout in the evenings and I’d prefer to not be attacked with insomnia all night.  There is sucralose in this which I’m not super happy about, but when I weigh the pros and cons of the product it wins out for me. It’s been a staple in my life since I found it!

My last supplement that I suggest everyone have in their cabinet, or in this case their fridge, is a great probiotic. A probiotic is a pill full of live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your, specifically your digestive system. Check out my post here for a more indepth view into why a probiotic is so necessary. The short version is that our soil today doesn’t have nearly the micronutrients that we need to create a healthy microbiome. Without a healthy microbiome our digestion can’t work effectively and we miss out on getting the nutrients from the food we’re eating. A great probiotic can make a world of different and my two favorites are VSL #3 and Prescript-Assist. Right now I’m using VSL #3, but since that has to be refrigerated I do use Prescript-Assist when I’m traveling. VSL #3 is my top choice because it is the only probiotic that has been medically tested and has a ton of great bacteria strains in it.

Taking a probiotic regularly can help you safeguard from bad bacteria that you may ingest and can help your gut rebalance in favor of your good gut bacteria and edge out the bad bacteria. Even if you don’t have IBS or stomach issues you may be having issues with your digestion or nutrient absorbtion that you don’t even realize. Dry skin, rashes, fatigue, depression, anxiety and many other issues can all be caused by bad digestion or an out of whack microbiome. As always, I believe in getting the nutrients you need from food first, but the supplements above are just that…a lovely supplement to what is hopefully a varied diet full of a rainbow of colors (and no, I don’t mean skittles).

    I’ve heard of taking collagen but i haven’t actually ever taken it. Do you really notice a difference when you take it?

      I definitely did. I started taking it because I workout a lot and it’s good for joints, but I had also stopped biting my nails around the same time. Every time I had previously tried to stop my lifelong bad habit of biting my nails they were always weak and brittle when they grew out and would break so easily. I’d just give up and go back to biting, but this time when I stopped my nails grew a lot stronger. They weren’t like nails of steal or anything, but they didn’t break nearly as easily and now I’m almost 2 months into no nail chomping!

      I also have a lot less split ends in my hair at the bottom for what it’s worth!

    I too have heard of the collagen peptides and its multiple benefits. Friends have even recommended them for a better skin. Would try it sometime!

    I had never thought about the other benefits of collegen, this is so interesting. I only think of it as a product in skin care products but with the benefits to our bones and joints, this is a supplement I should be taking.
